About SWEA

The Swedish Work Environment Authority is a government agency under the Ministry of Employment. The authority is responsible for issues relating to the work environment and occupational safety and health in Sweden. We promote healthy and safe working environments, supervise compliance with work environment and working time legislation, and contribute to long-term sustainable working life.

Following the merger with the Swedish Agency for Work Environment Expertise (SAWEE) in 2025, the authority’s mission also includes serving as Sweden’s national knowledge centre for work environment issues. We collect, compile and disseminate research-based knowledge to make work environment knowledge more accessible and practically useful for employers, employees, decision-makers and other stakeholders.

The authority follows developments in working life and contributes to knowledge development on current and future work environment challenges. Another important part of our mission is to promote knowledge development and cooperation within the European Union (EU) and internationally.

Our mission

  • Supervise compliance with work environment and working time legislation.
  • Promote healthy and safe working environments and prevent ill health and accidents at work.
  • Collect, compile and disseminate research-based knowledge about the work environment.
  • Evaluate and analyse developments and initiatives within the field of work environment and working life.
  • Follow and promote knowledge development in the European Union (EU) and internationally.
  • Support cooperation and knowledge exchange related to occupational safety and health.

The authority is Sweden’s national Focal Point for the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) and coordinates national cooperation related to EU-OSHA initiatives and campaigns. The authority also contributes to knowledge development and cooperation through participation in European and international networks, institutions, agencies and collaborative initiatives within occupational safety and health and working life issues.
