The construction industry is the backbone of urban development—but it’s also one of the most hazardous sectors for workers. Recognizing this, the Swedish government has entrusted the Swedish Agency for Work Environment Expertise (SAWEE) with a vital new assignment: to deepen our understanding of safety in the construction industry and identify what truly works to prevent accidents and promote well-being on site.

This initiative comes at a critical time. Despite advances in technology and regulation, construction workers continue to face high risks of injury and long-term health issues. SAWEE’s assignment aims to change that by gathering, analyzing, and disseminating knowledge that can lead to real-world improvements.

What’s the Focus?

SAWEE will explore:

  • Proven methods and tools that enhance safety culture on construction sites.
  • The role of leadership and communication in preventing accidents.
  • How digitalization and new technologies—like AI and robotics—can support safer work environments.
  • The importance of worker participation and training in building a proactive safety mindset.

Why It Matters

This isn’t just about compliance—it’s about creating a culture where safety is embedded in every task, every decision, and every level of the organization. The findings from this assignment will inform future policies, training programs, and workplace practices across Sweden and potentially beyond.

Get Involved

Are you working in construction, research, or occupational safety? SAWEE invites stakeholders to contribute insights, share best practices, and help shape a safer future for the industry.
