Following a preliminary study on the implications of artificial intelligence in machine control systems, the National Institute for Research and Safety (INRS) is planning to conduct a study on the autonomous mobility of machines at workplace.

Driverless mobile machines are present in industry and logistics since several decades, traditionally operating with mechanical or electrical guidance within dedicated environments. Advancements in AI now enable these machines to operate autonomously in spaces not originally designed for their use. This innovation has the potential to reduce the drudgery of workers in various sectors, including manufacturing, logistics, floor cleaning and construction.

The upcoming study by INRS aims to explore how these machines react in both familiar and variable work environments, by assessing their behavior in autonomous and remotely operated modes. This research project, scheduled to start in 2025, will focus primarily on human-machine interactions and the associated risk of collision. It will provide insights into safe and effective integration of autonomous technologies at the workplace.
