This research highlights the critical role Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) plays in advancing the concept of “decent work” as defined by the International Labour Organization (ILO). By addressing workplace conditions, safety, health risks, and wellbeing at work, OSH contributes to key pillars like worker rights, social protection, and job creation. The study calls for expanding OSH’s scope to tackle psychosocial hazards and emerging challenges like technology, climate change, and workforce diversity. A systems-thinking approach is proposed to better integrate OSH into global efforts toward decent work.

The research was compiled with contributions of several authors, and conceptualized by Paul Schulte, former division director of NIOSH, and Frank Pot, former chair of PEROSH.
