Numerous trades require respiratory protective equipment (RPE) to be worn. Some such items of equipment are provided with adsorbent cartridges that remain effective for a limited time only.

INRS has designed the software PREMEDIA, a predictive computation tool designed for occupational safety and health practitioners. The aim is to help them to determine the frequency with which the cartridges should be replaced based on various parameters such as nature and concentration of pollutants, ambient conditions, and type of mask and cartridge used. The computation algorithm is based on the Wheeler-Jonas empirical model, supplemented by tests conducted in the INRS laboratories.
