On May 17, 2024, from 15:00 to 16:00 CEST, PEROSH hosted a highly engaging webinar featuring young researchers pursuing their PhDs. The event showcased cutting-edge research in occupational safety and health, with insightful presentations from promising scholars. Here’s a brief account of the webinar:

15:00 – Introduction
The webinar commenced with an introduction by Jan Michiel Meeuwsen, Director of International Affairs at PEROSH. Meeuwsen highlighted the importance of international collaboration and networking to achieve PEROSH’s goals in advancing occupational safety and health research.

15:05 – Presentation by Stavros Kyriakidis
Stavros Kyriakidis from the National Research Centre for the Work Environment in Denmark presented his research titled “Low back pain among eldercare workers: What is the occupational and leisure-time physical activity ‘Sweet-’ and ‘Sour-Spot’?”. Kyriakidis’ work focuses on the epidemiology of physical activities among Danish blue-collar workers and its association with low back pain, healthcare utilization, and medication usage.

15:20 – Presentation by Julia Linke
Julia Linke, a PhD student at the Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (IFA) in Germany, discussed her project on “A reference material for non-volatile PAHs – development, production, and analysis”. Linke’s research revolves around environmental chemistry, specifically in the context of occupational safety, utilizing chromatographic techniques.

15:35 – Presentation by Martin Westhoven
Martin Westhoven from the German Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) explored the “Potentials of Artificial Intelligence for Occupational Safety Risk Analysis”. With a background in computer science and psychology, Westhoven’s current focus is on integrating AI into occupational safety and health to enhance risk analysis and prevention strategies.

15:50 – Questions and Answers
The webinar concluded with a lively Q&A session, allowing attendees to engage directly with the presenters, ask questions, and discuss the practical implications of their research.

16:00 – Conclusion
The event wrapped up with a brief conclusion, reiterating the significance of the research presented and the role of young researchers in advancing the field of occupational safety and health.

The PEROSH young researchers’ webinar was a resounding success, providing a platform for emerging scholars to present their innovative research. Attendees gained valuable insights into various aspects of occupational safety and health, from the impact of physical activities on eldercare workers to the development of reference materials for hazardous substances and the use of AI in risk analysis.
