At the 6th PEROSH Research Conference held in Manchester this September, Professor Andrew Curran CBE, Director of Science and Chief Scientific Adviser at the UK’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE), was honoured with a prestigious PEROSH award—recognising his outstanding contributions to occupational safety and health research across Europe.
Curran, who also served as moderator for the conference’s opening day, has long been a driving force behind evidence-based policy and innovation in workplace health. With a career spanning over three decades at HSE, he has led transformative research initiatives, advised government through critical moments such as the COVID-19 pandemic, and championed international collaboration through his roles in the PEROSH Steering Group and the global Sheffield Group.
The award was presented in recognition of his leadership in fostering scientific excellence and cross-border cooperation in occupational safety and health. Under his guidance, HSE has not only advanced its own research capabilities but also supported the broader European agenda for safer, healthier workplaces.
The Manchester conference, themed “Innovative Solutions for Occupational Safety and Health”, brought together researchers from across Europe to explore disruptive technologies, emerging risks, and chemical safety. Curran’s keynote welcome set the tone for a dynamic exchange of ideas, reinforcing the importance of science in shaping the future of work.
Andrew Curran’s award is a testament to his enduring commitment to improving lives through science, and to the collaborative spirit that defines PEROSH’s mission.
