As part of the PEROSH network, the ICSS-HS project examined how wood dust exposure is measured in workplaces across several European countries to check whether the measurement results from different countries are comparable.

🔍 What Did They Do?

To assess current practices, the project team conducted coordinated sampling campaigns in real workplaces using a standardized setup. Multiple measurement devices were used in parallel under identical conditions. This allowed for direct comparison of results and revealed differences that could be attributed to the measuring devices themselves.

📊 What Did They Find?

The measured values of different measurement strategies are not identical. However, in some cases, the relation can be estimated. These findings are intended to support the development of future occupational exposure limits and improve consistency in measurement practices across Europe. They also strengthen the scientific basis for ongoing discussions at the European level.

🤓 What Comes Next?

Looking ahead, the team plans to use controlled environments—such as dust tunnels or chambers—to simulate workplace conditions more precisely. This approach will help generate directly comparable data and further support the harmonization of exposure measurements.

🤝 Why Does It Matter?

Wood dust can pose serious health risks; accurate and comparable measurement methods are essential to protect workers. The findings could help improve health and safety regulations across Europe.
